“The multifunctional theater designed for Hupisaaret islands provides space for performances, festivities and conferences. Its dome can provide lighting for the park and serve as a sledding and skiing slope.”

Case Hupisaaret Open-air Theater

Hupisaaret Open-air Theater was our entry for an architectural design competition. The theater building has a dualistic nature. Its exterior and interior represent each other’s opposites: sky and earth, light and shadow, light and heavy, intimate and public. The building consists of an auditorium covered with a wooden dome structure and underground utility space.

The building is located on an island where it merges naturally into the larger public park area. Its mound-like shape enables many different activities, such as sledding and skiing in wintertime. The building is bold and its functions open it up to the surroundings while enhancing the area’s culture-historical tradition.
